Settled in 1875 by James George Bell on what was originally part of the Spanish land grant Rancho San Antonio. The post office, when established, was originaly known as Obed, with Bell serving as its first postmaster. In 1898, residents renamed it in honor of Bell. The adjacent city of Bell Gardens was named for the city of Bell. Bell's son, Alphonzo Bell, Sr., went on become wealthy and developed Bel-Air Estates in Los Angeles.
