Originally called Lexington in 1851 by Capt. J.A. Johnson of Lexington, Kentucky. Renamed Monte (or Mountain) by squatters who settled the area in 1852, for its high meadows and dense stand of willows. The name was later changed to Elmonte. In 1905, the name was changed back to El Monte at the insistence of Zoeth S. Eldredge.
