California Courts of Appeal

2nd District Court of Appeal
Ronald Reagan State Building
300 South Spring Street, Los Angeles 90013
(213) 830-7000

One of six Districts of the California Courts of Appeal, the Second District covers the Counties of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara & San Luis Obispo.

Courts of Appeal review judgments of Superior Courts for prejudicial errors of law and also have original jurisdiction over writs of habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition, and certiorari. Death penalty cases, however, are appealed directly to the California Supreme Court.

The district is subdivided into eight divisions. Divisions 1 to 5 and 7 to 8 are located in Los Angeles County (Division 6 covers Ventura, Santa Barbara & San Luis Obispo Counties).  Each division is assigned four justices and cases are reviewed by randomly-selected panels of three justices. Justices are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments. New Justices must be retained by voters at the next general election and at the end of each 12 year term.
