Gun homicides are defined here as deaths caused by use of a firearm other than by self-infliction. These firearms may be any type of handgun, shotgun, or rifle. The year 2021 recorded the most gun-related homicides in Los Angeles County in 15 years. Yet, even though L.A. County's number far exceeds that of every other California county (as does it's overall population), the county's gun homicide rate ranks below that of the counties of Alameda, Kern, Fresno, and Monterey. Furthermore, Los Angeles County's most recent gun homicides number fell far behind those tallied in the county more than 25 years ago. Although it wasn't practical for us to assemble county-level gun homicide data for U.S. counties outside of California, we were able to identify gun homicide rates in U.S. cities
