Former Chancellor Charles E. Young was the first UCLA graduate
to become its chancellor and, at age 36, the youngest administrator ever
to head a University of California campus. Upon his retirement in 1997,
he was also the longest-serving chief administrator among leaders of the
nation's major universities. Two-thirds of diplomas issued in UCLA's
history bare his signature. During Young’s tenure, UCLA's operating
budget grew from $170 million to more than $1.6 billion.
