The City of Los Angeles Fire Department was founded in 1871.

In 1978, the City of San Fernando disbanded their fire department and contracted with the City of Los Angeles (Los Angeles Fire Department) for fire services. In 1986, the City of Signal Hill transferred its contract for fire protection services from the Los Angeles County Fire Department to the Long Beach Fire Department. Signal Hill transferred back to contracting with LA County Fire in 2003. San Fernando and Signal Hill are the two only cities in Los Angeles County to contract with a neighboring city for fire services.

In 2002, the City of Commerce agreed to contract with the City of Montebello for the services of the Montebello Fire Department. Up until that time, Commerce had contracted with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. This move, however, was quickly challenged in court by the Los Angeles County Firefighters Union. The union charged that the two cities are unable to share fire services without prior permission of the Local Agency Formation Commission of Los Angeles County (LAFCO). Requests to LAFCO by Commerce and Montebello for approval were subsequently denied. After years of expensive litigation costs, both cities finally agreed in October 2004 to break off the deal.

In 2005, the City of La Habra, a city in Orange County, disbanded their own city department to contract with the Los Angeles County Fire Department of neighboring Los Angeles County. La Habra is the first city outside of Los Angeles County to contract with Los Angeles County for fire services.
