The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is the third largest municipal fire department in the United States, following the New York City Fire Department (officially Fire Department of the City of New York or FDNY) and the Chicago Fire Department.

Hermosa Beach Fire Department, established in 1907, was disbanded by the City Council in 2017 when the council decided that year to contract with the Los Angeles County Fire Department for fire protection services.
Vernon Fire Department, established in 1927, was disbanded by the City Council in 2020 when the council decided to contract with the Los Angeles County Fire Department for fire protection services.
