THE VOTE: November 5, 2002
In the
General Election of November 5, 2002, Los Angeles voters were asked to approve or deny the proposed secession of both the
Hollywood Area and the
San Fernando Valley Area from the City of Los Angeles. If voters had approved the proposals, both areas of the city would have been allowed to move forward to incorporate as cities independent of Los Angeles. However, both a majority of voters in their respective areas
and a majority of voters in the City of Los Angeles as a whole had to vote "Yes." The Hollywood proposal decisively failed with both local and city-wide voters. The San Fernando Valley proposal did barely win a majority of votes within the San Fernando Valley, but also decisively failed with Los Angeles city voters overall.
