The Spanish language has been continuously spoken in the Los Angeles area since 1771. Consequently, many local place names (including the name Los Angeles itself) are from the Spanish language. For the fun of it, we offer this map to help English-only speakers navigate about town. Oddly, these place names will probably seem quite foreign. Some of the translated place names are actually of local Native American origin (such as Malibu, Pacoima, Topanga, Tujunga) and one is actually of French origin (La Verne).
