The Catholic Los Angeles Archdiocese With more than 4.3 million members, the Los Angeles Archdiocese is the largest Catholic diocese in the United States. It covers the California counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara with 288 parishes located in 120 cites, ministering to some of the most ethnically diverse communities in the world. It oversees the sees of Fresno, Monterey, Orange, San Bernardino and San Diego. It has an annual budget of $169 million, operates 13 hospitals and (with 275 elementary and secondary schools teaching more than 95,000 pupils) operates the third largest school system, public or private, in California. It publishes two newspapers and holds about $626 million in assets.
Catholics make up about 34% of the population of Los Angeles County. The largest congregation in the L.A. Archdiocese is "La Placita" or Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. It worships in the old Plaza Church, the oldest house of worship in Los Angeles County (built 1818-1822), adjacent to historic Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles.
