The MTA bus system operates 185 routes. There are 18,500 bus stops in MTA's
1,433 square mile service area.
The oldest public transit bus systems still operating in Los
Angeles County are Culver City Transit (established March 4, 1928)
and
Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus (established April 14, 1928).
There are 2,084 licensed taxi cabs in the City of Los Angeles as compared to 12,187 in New York City and 6,300 in Chicago.
It is estimated that from 1,500 to 4,000 “bandit” or unlicensed cabs also operate on L.A. streets.
