In 1981, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley declared the song Christmas in Los Angeles to be the official Christmas song of the city. It was written in 1980 by the Grammy Award-winning Sherman Brothers* (Robert B. and Richard M. Sherman) for Lawrence Welk, to be used in his 1980 Christmas television special. According to Robert Sherman, in his 2013 book Moose, the song was the last commercial recording by Welk and his orchestra. The song was also featured in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York, through 1985.
The Sherman Brothers are credited with a number of Disney musicals, including Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and for Disney park attraction musical scores such as It’s a Small World (After All) and Tiki, Tiki, Tiki-Room.
