The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire of Southern California, first held at Paramount Ranch in Agoura in Los Angeles County in 1963, was America's first modern Renaissance faire. It has been an annual event in Southern California ever since. The event recreates a market faire from the Elizabethan era in England. It was established by husband and wife Ron Patterson and Phyllis Patterson (a former English and history teacher), radio station KPFK-FM, and the Living History Center. In 1989, after 22 years in Agoura, the faire moved to Glen Helen Regional Park in Devore in San Bernardino County. It returned to Los Angeles County in 2006 to its current location at Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale. More than 5 million people are reported to have visited the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Southern California, with each weekend of the event averaging about 20,000 visitors.
