Former Senator Kevin de León representing a district in Los Angeles County, served as President pro Tempore of the California Senate from 2014 through 2018. He was the first Latino in that position in more than a century. De Leon left the legislature and went on to win election to the Los Angeles City Council. Unfortunately, in 2022, he was embroiled, along with other councilmembers, in scandal that led to calls for his resignation.
