Opened in Los Angeles in 2015, the Women's Mosque of America was the first women-only mosque in the United States. Besides providing a safe space for women to feel welcome, respected, and actively engaged, it has sought to uplift the Muslim community by empowering women and girls with more direct access to Islamic scholarship and leadership opportunities. It further seeks to complement existing mosques, offering opportunities for women to grow, learn, and gain inspiration on behalf of their respective communities. It has also generated discussion about a woman’s place in Islam.
