Joining 10,500 athletes from around the globe were 86 Team USA athletes connected by hometown and/or school to Los Angeles County.
In Paris, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a Team USA track athlete and Los Angeles resident, shattered her own women's 400-meter hurdles world record in a blistering 50.37 seconds. She herself set the previous world record at the Olympic trials last June at 50.68 seconds and this is the sixth of the last six consecutive world records all set by her since June 2021. For the accomplishment, McLaughlin-Levrone won her second Olympic gold medal, as she had won gold in the same event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. She then went on to win a fourth gold medal in the women's 4x400 relay.
Of the 86 L.A. County-connected athletes in the 2024 Olympics, more than half had competed in previous Olympics games. Basketball player LeBron James and Volleyball player David Smith made their fourth Olympic appearance in Paris. James first competed in the 2012 Olympics and Smith in 2012. Both, at age 39, were the oldest among the L.A. County-connected athletes on Team USA. James, along with fellow Angelenos Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday and the rest of the U.S. men's team, went on to win, in Paris, America's fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in men's basketball.
Among L.A. County-connected athletes in the 2024 Olympics, 21 came with medals won in previous Olympics. Swimmer Abbey Weitzeil held the most medals from previous Olympics, winning four medals in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics: one gold, two silvers, and one bronze. In the 2024 games, she now added yet another gold and another silver medal. 15 athletes came with gold medals. With three gold medals, water polo player Maggie Steffens came with the most previous gold of this year's L.A. County-connected athletes. In 2024, track athlete Rai Benjamin came to Paris with one previous gold medal and added two more in the 2024 Games.
The youngest Team USA athletes connected to L.A County in the 2024 Olympics, at age 18, were artistic swimmers Megumi Field and Audrey Kwon and waterpolo players Emily Ausmus, Ryder Dodd and Jenna Flynn. Field and Kwon both won the silver medal in Paris in their team event.
The top three NCAA schools represented by all athletes on Team USA in 2024 were Stanford (38 athletes), UCLA (17 athletes), and USC (16 athletes).
The U.S. women's waterpolo team had won three consecutive gold medals since the 2012 Olympics. Five L.A.-County connected members of the U.S. team in the 2024 Olympics also competed in the 2020 Olympics and, of these, four in the 2016 Olympics. One, Maggie Steffens, had been on the team for all three wins, coming to Paris with gold medals from all three wins. She held the most gold medals won by L.A. County-connected athletes in previous Olympics. The team did not win a medal in the 2024 Olympics.
Waterpolo players Chase and Ryder Dodd were the first siblings, since 1988, to compete together for Team USA in the Olympics.

Gymnist Jordan Chiles was initially awarded a bronze medal in individual artistic gymnastics, after her score was increased due to a challenge by her coaches. The decision was later reversed, however, after her Romanian competitors challenged the timing of the U.S. challenge. Chiles had to surrender the bronze medal.
